A prospect asks ChatGPT to recommend a commercial cleaning company in Dallas, and it names three firms. Yours isn’t one of them, even though you rank on page one of Google for that exact phrase.
That gap is the entire AEO vs SEO question in one scene. SEO gets your pages ranked and clicked, while AEO gets your name into the answer itself. Most service businesses have spent years on the first and almost no time on the second, which is why the second holds the easy wins right now.
What is answer engine optimization?
So what is answer engine optimization? Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your brand cited or recommended in AI-generated answers. An answer engine is any tool that responds to a question with a written answer, usually with a few sources listed underneath.
- ChatGPT and Perplexity search the web and cite pages in their replies.
- Google AI Overviews summarize a topic above the regular results, and AI Mode handles longer conversational questions.
- Voice assistants such as Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant read a single answer aloud.
- Featured snippets are the highlighted answer boxes Google has shown above some results for years.
AEO focuses on a simple question: when a buyer asks an AI tool about your category, does your company come up, and is the information about you accurate? Voice search makes the stakes obvious, because a smart speaker usually delivers one recommendation and there is no page two.
What traditional SEO does
Traditional SEO focuses on rankings and clicks on traditional search engines like Google and Bing. You research the keywords your buyers type, build pages that answer them well, fix the technical problems that trip up crawlers, and earn links from other websites.
SEO optimizes content for a results page full of organic listings, ads, and maps, where the searcher still does the final work of comparing and choosing.
AEO vs SEO: Where they overlap and where they differ
The overlap is enormous, and Google says so in its guide to AI features and your website. The usual SEO best practices still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Google lists no additional requirements for appearing in them. To show up as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet.
Both disciplines need crawlable pages, accurate content written for people, a logical site structure, and evidence that you are a legitimate business, so if Google can’t crawl your site, no amount of AEO will rescue you.
The differences show up in the output: SEO earns you a position in a list of results, and AEO earns you a sentence inside a reply that may not come with a click at all.
- Search engines evaluate one page at a time, but AI models form an opinion of your brand from many different sources at once.
- Answer engines select short passages that answer a question cleanly, so a rambling page can lose out even when it ranks.
Google’s guide adds that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a “query fan-out” technique, which runs several related searches across subtopics to build one response. Pages that also answer the obvious follow-up questions give Google more material to work with.
Structured data and schema markup
Structured data is code that describes a page to search engines in a standardized, machine-readable format. Schema markup, based on the schema.org vocabulary, is how most websites write it, and Google recommends the JSON-LD format because it’s the easiest to implement and maintain.
Google’s introduction to structured data shares results from companies that added it. Rotten Tomatoes added structured data to 100,000 pages and measured a 25% higher click-through rate on those pages, and Nestlé found that pages appearing as rich results had an 82% higher click-through rate than pages that didn’t.
Now the honest caveat: Google also says there is no special schema you need to add to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data removes doubt about who you are and what you sell, which helps every system that reads your site, although it can’t force your way into an answer. For a service business, add Organization or LocalBusiness markup, Service markup on each core service page, and Person markup for a founder who is part of the brand, then validate everything in Google’s Rich Results Test.
Answer-first formatting
AI models extract passages, so if your answer sits in paragraph six, after a story about how the company started, a model has an easier option on a competitor’s page. Answer-first formatting fixes that for machines and humans alike.
- Use the questions prospective clients actually ask as your headings.
- Answer each heading in the first two or three sentences below it, then add the details and an example.
- Use lists and tables for steps and comparisons, since they are easy to lift into an answer.
- Name your company, your city, your service, and the type of client it’s for in plain words.
This is the same format that has won featured snippets for years, so optimizing for answer engines usually improves your traditional rankings as well.
Brand mentions on trusted sources
This is where AEO strategies look the least like old-school SEO. For AI-generated answers, a model learns what your company does from what the whole internet says about it, and your own website is only one voice in that crowd. When trade publications, local news outlets, industry associations, podcasts, and review sites describe you consistently, AI platforms have one clear description to repeat.
That makes PR an AEO tool, because earned media coverage, expert quotes, and award lists put your name next to your category on websites AI models already trust. Our public relations work pays off twice, with links for SEO and brand mentions for AEO. Founders and executives need the same attention, which we explain in our guide to personal branding for CEOs in AI search.
How to measure SEO and AEO
SEO measurement is well established, since Google Search Console and Google Analytics track rankings, impressions, clicks, organic traffic, and the form submissions that traffic produces. Visits from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in the Search Console Performance report, under the “Web” search type, together with the rest of your search traffic. Google also says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, by which it means visitors are more likely to spend more time on the site.
AEO measurement is newer, and these are the metrics we monitor:
- AI share of voice is the percentage of relevant AI answers in your category that mention your brand, compared with competitors.
- Citations count how often AI tools link to your pages as a source.
- Accuracy tracks whether the answers describe your services, locations, and pricing correctly.
- Referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and similar sites appears in your analytics, and a “How did you hear about us?” field on your intake form catches the rest.
AI-generated responses change from day to day, and Google notes that AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models, so the answers and links vary. We track trends over several months and ignore individual results. A manual version works fine: write 20 to 30 questions your buyers would ask, put them to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google every month, and record which companies get named.
Here is what moving that number looks like: OrangeBag, a laundry logistics company, reached 49.73% AI visibility during our SEO and AEO work, up from around 16% earlier in the same month, and we rebuilt its website along the way.
A practical AEO strategy for a service business
Here is the sequence we’d recommend for a service business with a decent website and a small marketing team.
- Confirm that your robots.txt file and your CDN let search and AI crawlers in. OpenAI’s crawler documentation explains that OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT search and is separate from GPTBot, which gathers training data, so you can allow one and block the other.
- Run your buyer questions through the major AI tools and document the results.
- Fix your technical SEO basics, such as indexing, page speed, title tags, and internal links.
- Rewrite your most valuable service pages in answer-first format and add structured data.
- Build brand mentions on trusted sources through PR, reviews, directories, and partner content.
- Publish content that answers the cost and comparison questions your sales team hears every week, then measure monthly and adjust.
If you’d like a team to run this with you, our SEO and AEO consulting program works through it over 90 days.
Why you need both
Treating them as either-or is a mistake. Google’s AI features depend on its search index, so AEO without SEO has nothing to stand on. Some buyers still compare several websites, while others call the first company an AI answer mentions or ask a voice assistant from the car, and you don’t get to choose how your next client searches.
The good news is that most of the effort counts twice. Clear service pages, accurate markup, and strong press mentions improve your rankings and your odds of being recommended, so creating content that serves both is the efficient path.
