The gaming industry has never been more popular than it is today. In 2021 alone, it is estimated to have generated over $180 billion in revenue. Not only are video games at an all-time high, but board games have seen a massive resurgence in popularity, with the tabletop gaming space expected to grow over 13% by 2026 to an estimated $13 billion in revenue. With this revival, tabletop adaptations of video games have begun to emerge and gain unprecedented steam.

I’m proud to say that I have been a part of this emergence, having successfully teamed up with Edmund McMillen to translate one of indie gaming’s most popular hits, The Binding of Isaac, into one of Kickstarter’s most funded tabletop games of all time. It was far from an easy task, but despite the hurdles, working with the creators and fans to make a physical product based on a digital game was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.

Why Create A Tabletop Version?

Tabletop adaptations give the IP a second life outside of the digital realm. Bringing a game off the screen and onto the tabletop builds a sense of community and broadens its audience. Just because a digital game is insanely popular does not necessarily mean everyone knows about it. Millions didn’t know about Cuphead until it became a Netflix animated series. However, even before that, Cuphead received a tabletop adaptation that helped extend the reach of the brand.

Tabletop games are a way to garner new audiences for your already established IP. Additionally, creating a tabletop version can introduce new mechanics that are not necessarily easily incorporated into the digital version. For The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls, we added a type of multiplayer element that’s not available, or even logically possible, in the digital version.

Before You Begin

Creating an authentic tabletop adaptation is not an easy feat. You can always go the route where you attach your IP to an already established game like Monopoly, but what value does that bring to your brand? Sure, Super Mario Bros. Monopoly is a fun game, but it’s not a Mario game, it’s Monopoly.

In order to elevate your IP, rather than relying on a reskinned version of an already established board game, you need to create a new game from the ground up, which involves finding creative ways to transform digital game mechanics for the physical space. The Duke of Flies from The Binding of Isaac, is a great example of how to effectively translate a digital mechanic for tabletop. In the video game version, The Duke of Flies has a cloud of flies (hence his name) surrounding him, shielding him from the players’ attacks. In order to beat him, you must shoot the Duke directly while avoiding the flies shielding and defending him. While this is a great concept for digital, it’s not something that can be directly carried over to the tabletop version, so the creator came up with a innovative solution to abstractly simulate this type of combat: a dice mechanic, in which, whenever you would try to attack the Duke in the tabletop game, you would roll the dice to see if you hit him or one of his flies instead, negating the damage altogether.

It sounds simple enough, right? But then you have to think of all the other monsters The Binding of Isaac has, with their own unique attacks and skillsets, and multiply what you just did with one monster by 500+, making sure each encounter is just as authentic and memorable as the original digital version. It’s a daunting but rewarding task.

Seek Feedback From Loyal Fans

If you’re looking to create a tabletop adaption of a videogame, or vice-versa, my best advice would be to work with the fans to make it happen, and crowdfunding is 100% your best option. For The Binding of Isaac campaigns, the team realized that we couldn’t do this properly without working with established fans of the franchise. We created a “spoiler site” where fans helped us create and edit the cards, so we could deliver the game in a timely manner. They loved it, and their feedback was instrumental in the balancing of the game. For a game with an almost limitless amount of card combinations, it would be impossible for us to ensure quality without them.

Now, this same fanbase is helping us develop a game based on an extremely successful mobile app. It’s a wildly different game, but our fans have taken to it because they know we’re listening to them. Their feedback is helping us streamline gameplay and make it more accessible to the audience.

Your own fanbase is invaluable. They are the ones who helped get you to where you are today. Reward them by allowing them to be involved in some capacity, and they will eagerly participate. It’s a testament to the community you’ve created and will continue to sustain.

Far too often you hear about “game changers” and entrepreneurs who experience overnight success with their first major product and then subsequently face massive failure shortly after when their next big thing ultimately flops. No single person, product, or brand has a 100% perfect record. Everyone and everything experiences pitfalls at some point.

Why do these same mistakes, where you first see monstrous success followed by gut-wrenching failure, continue to happen on a regular basis? From what I’ve seen, it’s a case of the Midas Touch Syndrome, where people see success in one area, and immediately jump at the opportunity to “continue the momentum” with wide eyes and misguided confidence that they can do no wrong.

As we know from the classic Greek tale, King Midas was gifted with the ability to turn everything he touched into gold. However, this “gift” quickly turned into a disaster, with Midas wishing to relinquish it in the end. When people have a hit product release, what often follows is the sentiment that the next product will be just as big or bigger. There is also a tendency for a higher risk tolerance given the belief that success in one area will lead to success in another. Just look at the tremendous amount of bad music albums we have from top athletes or actors.

We recently experienced a strong case of Midas Touch Syndrome ourselves, after we hit it big with the launch of the seventh most successful game of all time on Kickstarter. We were riding a wave of notoriety and success, and with that came numerous offers for other games and opportunities. With our newfound confidence, we were in discussion to sign games that were outside of our core offering with the belief that we’d make it work given our recent success. We even considered products outside of the game space and also entertained various business acquisitions with the idea that we could transfer our success in games to new product areas and businesses. These were all recipes for failure, and thankfully we reversed our course of action on these before the products launched.

The allure of new products and innovations can be seen as a tool for rapid growth, but in actuality, it can be equally dangerous if not aligned with products that have been the key to your success. Constant expansions, pivots and strategies de jure are damaging to morale when the new initiatives are not aligned with employee expectations of the organization.

The Midas Touch Syndrome can be exceptionally deadly to small businesses, if not caught in time, as it can affect the company’s core strategy and cause the company to lose sight of its vision and purpose. Most importantly, the financial risk of a failure caused by this syndrome can put a company out of business. Growth is a double-edged sword, and small businesses often grow themselves out of business.

After some distractions, we made the right decisions and our company is stronger with a renewed focus on our core values. Here are my tips to help other companies avoid the Midas Touch Syndrome:

1. Focus on what you and your team do best.

2. Develop a strong mission statement and use it as your guiding light.

3. Seek extensive outside counsel from stakeholders and, more importantly, non-stakeholders on all business decisions—let them play devil’s advocate.

4. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

5. Lean into the power of “No” to fend off the distractions of shiny new objects.

6. Compensate the feeling of loss for not pursuing a new opportunity by transferring your energy to innovating in your core products.

7. It’s the CEO’s job to stay focused and not go down rabbit holes.

8. The savviest CEOs say “no” more than they say “yes” (just ask Warren Buffet).

Overall, focus on what your company is strong at and constantly work toward innovating your strengths and improving your core products and services.

With new variants making headlines, it’s a reminder that Covid-19 is still a major factor in our daily lives, impacting businesses across the board. Take manufacturing and the overall production process as an example: It’s no longer a surprise or shock when you hear that a project has been delayed because of Covid-19’s impact on the global supply chain, slowing practically every production that involves international shipping and collaboration. Prior to Covid-19, a supply chain shortage or postponed delivery dates would make industry news; now it’s to be expected — it’s the norm. The question that’s plaguing those in the production industry is “How do we work and succeed in this new normal?” Experiencing this firsthand, I can tell you that it’s not all doom and gloom, as the solution may be as simple as repositioning how you view your own supply chain and manufacturing process.

Being ever the optimist, I take pride in seeing the best in the worst of situations. Covid-19 made my team and me reevaluate how we viewed our manufacturers and reinforced just how valuable the relationships we’ve created are. We see our manufacturers and practically everyone we do business with as partners, not as for-hire service providers. I consider this to be crucial for anyone doing business, especially in times of global uncertainty, because when you view your service providers as something more along the lines of partners and treat them as such, they will, in turn, treat you in a similar fashion (the good ones, at least).

We’re all in this shared experience and everyone you talk to — whether it’s your local shipper, your freight forward, your manufacturer or your raw goods supplier — is getting squeezed in some form or fashion. Because of this and all the other constraints everyone is dealing with, we’re looking to each other for support and are forced to trust each other more than ever. There’s a lot to be said about how we used to take travel and in-person meetings for granted. Prior to Covid-19, I would rack up 130,000 miles of international travel in a slow year visiting our manufacturers for quality control, ensuring we’re on schedule and securing new deals. This past year I’ve hardly left my home state.

With physical production being a personal “touch” and “feel” business, video calls simply cannot replicate the in-person experience. You cannot do proper quality control through Zoom. What you can do is ship products back and forth for testing, which is very time-consuming and costly. This has led me to put more trust into my overseas partners. I’ve had to trust that my partners were looking out for my best interest, trust they were being open and transparent with me during all conversations, and trust they were not going to make my company look bad when the final product was delivered. Because of the trust I have in my partners, I am confident that my requests, decisions, and solutions are implemented properly, allowing us to minimize the physical shipping of products for quality control and resulting in an overall quicker turnaround given all the global roadblocks. Some delays are inevitable given the current landscape, but being transparent with consumers, fans, partners, and others can help alleviate the aggravation and frustration from these delays.

During the global supply chain slowdown, the best production partners I’ve had are the ones that have told me “no” — that have pushed back and worked with me on finding the best price-to-product ratio. You want the pushback — you want the dialogue and conversation — because in the end, you’re going to come up with a better product and, more importantly, a better long-term and financially positive business relationship.

The gaming industry embodies continuous evolution, offering boundless opportunities to those who venture into it. Its capacity to bridge various forms of media and foster unique partnerships is unparalleled, allowing for creative and innovative collaborations that push the boundaries of traditional gaming experiences. This dynamic environment demands strategies that can generate and sustain hype, especially when introducing new products to a market as competitive and vibrant as that of gaming. The launch of a new game, particularly one that steps away from digital platforms and into the tactile world of tabletop gaming, requires a meticulous approach to creating and maintaining consumer interest pre-launch.

We recently saw massive results with a campaign we did with streamer and influencer DrLupo, launching the tabletop experience “Streamer Standoff”. Below, I outline the four key strategies that were instrumental in achieving campaign success, highlighting our actions and drawing insights from successful practices and marketing methodologies within the gaming industry.

1. Leveraging the Power of Partnerships

A foundational strategy in building anticipation for a game’s release is establishing partnerships that can amplify its reach and relevance. Collaborating with YouTube, influencers, gaming communities, and other brands within and outside the gaming industry can provide a multifaceted platform for promotion. For instance, aligning with a well-known figure in the gaming or content creation world, like DrLupo, can directly connect a new game to an established and engaged audience. This partnership should extend beyond just endorsement, weaving the collaborator’s identity into the game’s marketing narrative to foster a genuine connection with potential customers.

2. Implementing a Comprehensive Marketing Strategy

Crafting a multi-channel marketing strategy is critical to capturing the attention of a diverse audience. This approach should integrate both digital and traditional marketing channels to create a campaign that resonates across different demographics. Key elements include engaging content on social media platforms, targeted online advertising, email marketing campaigns designed to build anticipation, and interactive experiences that can engage the audience. Utilizing data analytics to understand and target potential customer demographics effectively can enhance the reach and impact of promotional efforts, ensuring that the message of the new game permeates the noise of the digital world. As we crossed over from digital gaming into tangible tabletop gaming, this comprehensive marketing strategy ensured that we brought DrLupo’s audience with us and merged them with our existing fanbase.

3. Employing a Phased Approach

A phased marketing approach helps maintain momentum and interest in the lead-up to a game’s release. Starting with teaser content that sparks curiosity, followed by a gradual release of more detailed information about the game, can effectively build anticipation. Each phase should aim to engage the audience further, whether through exclusive previews, behind-the-scenes looks at game development, or interactive online events. Timing these phases to coincide with major gaming events or conventions can also leverage existing gaming community engagement to boost visibility and hype. In our case, the initial phase centered around DrLupo announcing the game on a YouTube panel at VidCon. It then transitioned into a focused launch on DrLupo’s channel, where he engaged with his digital community by streaming himself playing “Streamer Standoff.” Exclusive shopping events and pre-sale opportunities were available for attendees. The retail launch will expand the game’s availability, ensuring a global footprint.

4. Fostering Community Engagement

Cultivating a dedicated community around a game pre-launch can be a game-changer. Strategies for community engagement include creating forums or social media groups where fans can discuss the game, share content, and participate in exclusive events. Involving the community in the game’s development process through beta testing or feedback sessions can also create a sense of ownership and investment among potential players. Organizing contests, giveaways, or live Q&A sessions with the development team can further enhance engagement and build a loyal following even before the game hits the shelves. We had playtesting sessions at VidCon, GCX, and beyond, which provided hands-on experiences, boosting investment by drawing players deeper into the game’s world.

Successfully launching a new game in today’s competitive market requires a strategic blend of innovation, collaboration, and engagement. By leveraging partnerships, employing a comprehensive and phased marketing strategy, and fostering a vibrant community, game developers and publishers can create a buzz that not only peaks at launch but sustains interest well into the future. This holistic approach to presale hype not only maximizes the initial impact of a game’s release but also establishes a foundation for sustained success in the gaming industry.

In today’s globalized business environment, the eligible workforce is not bound by borders. Businesses are able to employ the best person for the role, regardless of where they reside, allowing us to capitalize on talent. My entire team resides in different area and zip codes, and it has had a profound impact on the success of my business, Maestro Media. However, employing a transnational team necessitates a different approach. Here are 5 tips I use in employing my transnational team:

Customized Benefits for Remote Teams

When employing a transnational team, one size does not fit all, and that is also applicable in terms of the benefits you offer. For example, only providing US health insurance would not be beneficial for international employees. Instead, a health insurance stipend can be offered, ensuring that the benefit is made accessible to everyone on the team.

Flexible Work Schedules

The age of 9 to 5 is coming to an end with flexible work schedules quickly becoming the new status quo. Not only is it appealing for employees, but it also opens up the workforce to those living in different time zones and other countries. This approach allows employees to work during their most productive hours, while still providing overlapping hours for team collaboration.

Prioritizing Efficient and Effective Asynchronous Communication

In an office setting, forgotten information can be quickly transmitted by stepping into someone’s cubicle; however, communication becomes key when your team isn’t there to receive the information sporadically. The need for clear and concise communication could not be more imperative, as the consequence could be a work delay or a task completed incorrectly. Typically, the communication is asynchronous, allowing team members in different time zones and countries to contribute without the need for real-time interaction.

I regularly host check-ins with my team every Monday, in order to ensure that we are all on the same page with our weekly and long-term goals. This also fosters a sense of community and provides a space for open discussion, should anything have arisen during the prior week.

Performance Management Systems

Having a transnational team working autonomously necessitates a new way of measuring performance. To gauge the performance of my team, I’ve implemented a results-oriented performance management system that focuses on outcomes rather than hours worked. This approach encourages productivity and allows team members to work in a way that suits their personal and professional lives. It also frees me from stepping into a role of micromanaging and boosts trust in my team.

Dynamic Team Building

Team building with a transnational team is more nuanced than the traditional, in-person games and visits to the ropes course. It poses its challenges but also opens us up to more possibilities.

At Maestro Media, we host an annual media summit, where the team gathers digitally for a time of growth, encouragement, and development. We discuss the successes and challenges of the previous year, while vision casting for the upcoming year. A motivational speaker also joins us for a segment to bolster spirits and ignite passions.

When we are on the brink of launching a big Kickstarter campaign, we convene pre-midnight the night before in our pajamas for a digital sleepover. This is a time for us to share our excitement and hopes with each other, facilitating community and building stronger relationships.

As businesses, it is paramount that we remain flexible to meet the changes of the professional landscape. Today’s environment is entirely globalized, so it is our responsibility to take advantage of it and capitalize on the opportunity to develop our teams utilizing the best talent around the world. Searching transnationally when growing my team has allowed me to employ incredible individuals, who are experts in their field, and have contributed to the success of Maestro Media. When employing transnational teams, one must remain cognizant of the nuances by offering individualized benefits, flexible work schedules, asynchronous communication, relevant performance management systems, and dynamic team building.

1. Refresh Retail Walls to Boost Visual Merchandising

Retail environments rely on first impressions. Euro Pratik wall panels offer an efficient way to convert plain walls into premium displays, highlighting your products in their ideal atmosphere. Use textured finishes or bold patterns behind shelves, cash counters, or product displays to draw attention and create a high end shopping experience.

2. Add Style and Durability to Hospitality Spaces

Materials that balance beauty and resilience, such as Euro Pratik’s wallcoverings, are substantially beneficial for hotels, restaurants, cafes, and lounges to utilize. Euro Pratik wallcoverings protect surfaces in high traffic areas from scratches, stains, and wear while also delivering a polished designer look. They are ideal for reception areas, dining spaces, corridors, and guest rooms. Their ability to be placed throughout will add to brand continuity and identity.

3. Upgrade Office Interiors Without Major Renovation

The desire to install modern interiors is often offset by traditional renovation costs, along with the disruption it can cause. Euro Pratik wall panels provide the perfect rebuttal – installing quickly with minimal mess, making them ideal for office upgrades. They can be used in conference rooms, reception areas, meeting pods, or employee lounges to create a professional and inviting environment. Certain panels can also double as an acoustic layer, aiding sound quality during meetings or calls.

4. Offer Premium Finishes to Customers if You Are a Contractor or Builder

Builders and interior contractors can elevate the value of their service offerings by recommending Euro Pratik panels to clients. These wallcoverings give homeowners and businesses a modern designer finish, without the long timelines and extensive costs of carpentry or stone work. Contractors appreciate the speed of installation, while clients value the premium look, making Euro Pratik an easy upsell that improves customer satisfaction and project profitability.

Display centers, from automobile showrooms to lifestyle galleries, require standout elements that capture attention. How Euro Pratik Wall Panels Support Sustainable Interior Design for Modern Businesses

Sustainability, in many forms, is becoming a top priority for businesses across most sectors. In our realm, we see that companies are actively searching for interior materials that look premium while reducing environmental impact. Euro Pratik wall panels offer a responsible alternative to traditional construction methods by helping businesses save resources and reduce waste.

Euro Pratik supports sustainability across commercial projects in the following capacities:

1. Minimal Waste Compared to Traditional Construction

Traditional building materials often generate significant waste: carpentry, drywall, stonework, and on-site finishing all require cutting, sanding, and adjustments that leave behind excess scrap. Euro Pratik wallcoverings are manufactured with precise dimensions and easy installation requirements, which greatly reduces the on-site waste generated. Contractors and businesses benefit from cleaner installations and lower disposal volume, contributing to greener operations overall.

2. Lower Carbon Footprint from Fast Installation

Euro Pratik wall panels install quickly and cleanly, thereby shortening project timelines and reducing the overall carbon footprint. They allow you to say goodbye to long construction timelines that require multiple site visits, heavy machinery, and extended energy use. Offices, hotels, retail stores, and showrooms can refresh their spaces without the substantial energy consumption that comes with traditional renovation methods.

3. Durable Materials that Reduce Replacement Frequency

Sustainability focuses not on the composition of the product, but also its endurance. Euro Pratik wall panels are built for durability with scratch resistance, moisture tolerance, and long-term shape retention. Therefore, businesses will replace their surfaces far less often, reducing the environmental impact associated with frequent renovations. A longer product lifecycle is one of the most meaningful contributors to sustainable building practices.

4. Cleaner Production and Reduced Use of Finishing Chemicals

Euro Pratik wallcoverings come prefinished removing the need for on-site chemicals. This negates the necessity for paints, varnishes, adhesives, and surface treatments common in traditional interiors, which release volatile organic compounds harming indoor air quality. The transition to prefinished wall panels supports healthier indoor environments for guests, customers, and employees while reducing the environmental impact of construction.

5. Allows Businesses to Renovate Without Demolishing Existing Structures

Sustainable renovations focus on preservation rather than demolition. Euro Pratik panels can often be installed directly over existing surfaces, which prevents the removal of old materials, reduces debris, and keeps large volumes of construction waste out of landfills. For commercial chains and hospitality brands with frequent renovation cycles, this is an easy way to modernize interiors responsibly and efficiently.

6. Supports Energy Efficiency Through Added Insulation and Acoustic Control

Certain Euro Pratik wall panel collections aid in creating better insulated and acoustically balanced interiors. Improved insulation helps regulate indoor temperature; thereby, reducing heating and cooling requirements. Acoustic benefits also improve comfort in restaurants, hotels, offices, and entertainment venues. Over time these efficiencies contribute to cost savings, due to lower energy consumption.

Why Sustainable Businesses Choose Euro Pratik

Modern businesses are championing materials that reflect both their style and investment in sustainable practices. Euro Pratik wall panels help reduce waste, extend product lifespan, improve indoor air quality, and minimize the environmental impact of commercial renovations. They offer a sustainable path to achieving beautiful, functional spaces without the cost or environmental footprint associated with traditional construction.

If your business is exploring eco-friendly interior solutions, our team can help you choose the right Euro Pratik panels for your goals.

The Leak Defense System is Non-Negotiable for Homeowners

Water damage is one of the most expensive and disruptive problems homeowners face; unfortunately, it often goes unnoticed until it is too late. A tiny leak lurking behind a wall, under a sink, or in a crawl space can unsuspectingly be causing thousands of dollars in damage before anyone sees a single drop. The Leak Defense System was created to prevent that nightmare alleviating a significant challenge of home ownership. It is peace of mind, protection, and smart home technology working together to safeguard the place that matters most.

Owning the Leak Defense System is one of the smartest decisions you can make for your home and your family.

1. It Prevents Catastrophic Water Damage

Most homeowners discover leaks only after the damage is visible. By then, it’s too late, drywall, flooring, cabinets, and personal belongings are affected. Leak Defense gives you 24/7 protection by automatically detecting abnormal water flow anywhere in the home. If a leak occurs, the system shuts off the water instantly, leaving no time for sneaky leaks to cause catastrophic damage.

2. 24/7 Monitoring

With the Leak Defense System, you can leave home confidently. It prevents you from arriving home from vacations, business trips, long workdays, or even a simple night out and discovering that a leak has damaged your space. If a leak happens while you are away, the system will stop the water and notify you. The Leak Defense System is protecting your home 24/7, with or without you there.

3. It Saves You Thousands in Insurance Claims and Repairs

Water damage is one of the top home insurance claims, often costing many thousands of dollars to repair. The costs add up fast, from mold remediation to flooring replacement, the damage can be extensive. Leak Defense helps you avoid these financial headaches entirely. Many insurance providers even offer discounts for proactive leak detection systems because of how they significantly reduce risk.

4. It Integrates Seamlessly with Your Smart Home

Today’s homes are smarter and more connected than ever. Leak Defense is at the forefront of technology with its smart home integration abilities. You can monitor water usage, check the system status, and receive alerts directly on your phone. Whether you want to shut off your water remotely or view real-time data, everything you need is in the palm of your hand.

LOS ANGELES, Calif – July 8, 2024 – Oni Press – the multiple Eisner and Harvey Award-winning publisher of groundbreaking comics and graphic novels since 1997 and leading board game publisher Maestro Media, are thrilled to announce a new collaboration for board games inspired by some of Oni’s most beloved comic book hits. This partnership will bring to life three new board games based on the acclaimed comic book series The Sixth Gun by creators Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt, Dwellings by cartoonist Jay Stephens, and Jill and the Killers by creators Olivia Cuartero-Briggs and Roberta Ingranata. The announcement comes ahead of San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), where both companies will preview upcoming plans for the new gaming partnership. To be developed in close coordination with the respective creators of each title, the first games produced under the partnership are slated for release in 2025.

The collaboration between Oni Press and Maestro Media marks a significant milestone in the board game and comic book industries, combining the creative prowess of both companies to deliver unique gaming experiences. Each board game will capture the essence of its respective comic book series, offering fans an immersive adventure in the worlds they love with word-class game design from the tabletop game publisher behind recent blockbuster releases, including The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls, Hello Kitty: Day at the Park, and the upcoming Smurfs Hidden Village.

The new Oni-Maestro partnership will include:

  • The Sixth Gun: From the world of the iconic, Eisner Award-nominated series from master storytellers Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt! In 1866, the Confederacy has fallen, but evil still pervades a scarred nation. A rebel general warped by impossibly dark magic searches the frontier for The Sixth Gun – an ancient weapon of unspeakable occult power…now held by an ordinary young woman who must learn to master her pistol’s arcane secrets before it can unleash Armageddon.
  • Dwellings: Based on the charmingly terrifying, sold-out horror hit from Emmy Award-winning cartoonist Jay Stephens that The Comics Journal calls “quite possibly the best horror comic of the last 20 years”! Welcome to Elwich – an oasis of small-town perfection, where the schools overflow with cheery-eyed children, lovingly adorned homes line the historic boulevards … and only the crows can see the deep, festering rot of murder, demonology and psychosis that lurks beneath the pristine surface. Elwich has them all on offer – and behind every dwelling awaits a horrifying new story to be told.
  • Jill and the Killers: Inspired by the nerve-rattling murder mystery-within-a-mystery by writer Olivia Cuartero-Briggs and artist Roberta Ingranata! Teenager Jill Estrada’s once-quiet life in a secluded Arizona town has been turned upside-down by the unsolved disappearance of her mother … only for the puzzle to deepen when she discovers a true-crime subscription game that seems to reveal clues that only a killer close to home could know…

Hunter Gorinson, President and Publisher at Oni Press, added: “It’s a huge thrill to bring Oni’s creators together to collaborate with Maestro Media, who have distinguished themselves with an incredible slate of tabletop games in recent years. Like us, they’re passionate about comics and storytelling, and we’re eager to share these games with longtime readers and brand-new players alike.”

LOS ANGELES, Calif – February 28, 2023 – Today Maestro Media, a leader in tabletop game publishing and community-driven campaigns, in association with Brand Central, along with award-winning game designer Steve Gabry, officially launched the Kickstarter campaign (with retail plans already in the works) for the highly-anticipated Sally Face: Strange Nightmares, the tabletop adaptation of the indie hit video game Sally Face.

View the trailer HERE

Visit the campaign page HERE

Sally Face: Strange Nightmares is a cooperative narrative and adventure-mystery game that has you play as the iconic characters from the franchise who are tasked with investigating the surrounding mysteries plaguing their home and town. You’ll need to work quickly as corruption is slowly taking over. Roll dice to overcome evil before it’s too late! With multiple, variable storylines to play through there’s always something new to discover.

Mirroring the video game’s progression system, Sally Face: Strange Nightmares is played as a narrative story consisting of multiple “chapters” with their own unique mysteries and challenges, each with a different setup and victory conditions, ensuring a unique experience each game. New mysteries, curses, and items will be “unlocked” as the story progresses, with each requiring a combination of dice rolls and location-specific objects to face off against the final challenge. Players take turns as they attempt to solve mysteries, avoid cops and pacify ghosts, and prevent corruption from overtaking the apartment building. On a player’s turn they roll custom dice and spend the results of their dice to complete tasks, find clues, and navigate through the game – but if they dabble too much, the powers that be may become too strong to stop, ultimately overwhelming you into oblivion.

In addition to Sally Face: Strange Nightmares, Maestro Media and Steve Gabry are collaborating on an exclusive merchandise line featuring fan-requested vinyl figures, apparel and home decor, original music and more. Included in the continued expansion of the Sally Face universe will be a subscription mystery box program, Sally Face: Strange Boxes with limited edition apparel, merchandise and items featuring collaborations with well known artists within the gaming, comic and indie realms, all intertwined with an immersive mystery game with clues that need to be solved every month.

Ever had that moment when you’re on an important call, and suddenly your voice disappears into the digital void because your AirPods decided they’d rather hang out with your iPad? Welcome to my week of technological adultery.

The Great Device Affair of 2025

There I was, pitching to a client on Zoom, confidence flowing, charisma on point, when suddenly my voice transported across the room to my iPad, which wasn’t even awake! It was just sitting there, innocently charging, yet somehow seducing my AirPods away from my active meeting. The client heard nothing but silence while I continued talking to my webcam like a mime with excellent diction.

What followed was a frantic dance of button-mashing and confused hand gestures that made me look like I was performing an interpretive dance about “technology frustration” – which, in fairness, I kind of was.

The Serial Cheaters in My Home

My Apple ecosystem has become a soap opera of connectivity. My devices play musical chairs with my Bluetooth headphones without inviting me to participate. I’ve started to take it personally.

My MacBook and iPhone have developed a particularly toxic relationship with my Bluetooth speaker. They fight over it like it’s the last cookie in the jar. I’ll be deep into a podcast on my phone when my MacBook wakes from sleep and whispers sweet nothings to my speaker, which promptly abandons my true crime episode to play the system chime from an email I received three days ago.

The betrayal! The scandal! The audacity!

Apple’s Seamless Experience (Too Seamless, Perhaps?)

Apple calls this a “seamless experience.” I call it “digital polyamory I never consented to.” Sure, it’s convenient when it works as intended – that magical moment when you can switch your AirPods from your iPhone to your Mac with a click. But when the devices start making these decisions autonomously? That’s not seamless; that’s a coup. I didn’t put a pineapple outside my door, but apparently my devices are still having wild parties with each other when I’m not looking.

Why This Technological Infidelity Happens

For those wondering about the technical explanation (beyond “my devices are plotting against me”):

This behavior stems from Apple’s Continuity and Handoff features, designed to create that unified ecosystem experience. When you sign into multiple Apple devices with the same Apple ID, they become aware of each other over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, sharing information about which audio devices are connected.

Sometimes, your devices make assumptions about which one you want to use based on:

– Which device you’re actively using

– Which device you most recently used with that Bluetooth accessory

– Proximity between devices

– Power state (awake vs. asleep)

Add in some occasional Bluetooth hiccups and automatic connection settings, and you’ve got a recipe for unexpected audio switcheroos.

Regaining Control of Your Digital Love Life

If you’re tired of feeling like the awkward third wheel in your own tech relationship, here are some solutions:

1. Disable auto-switching: Go to Bluetooth settings for your AirPods in your iPhone or iPad settings, tap on your AirPods, and change “Connect to This iPhone/iPad” from “Automatically” to “When Last Connected to This iPhone/iPad.”

2. Bluetooth management: Temporarily turn off Bluetooth on devices you’re not using (swipe to Control Center and tap the Bluetooth icon to disconnect).

3. Focus modes: Set up Focus modes that limit which devices can interrupt your current activity.

4. Get relationship counseling: Okay, not really, but resetting your Bluetooth connections occasionally can help establish healthy boundaries.

5. The nuclear option: Sign out of iCloud on devices you don’t need in the ecosystem. It’s drastic, but sometimes a clean break is what you need.

Until next time, may your Bluetooth connections be faithful and your devices respect your boundaries.

Wirelessly yours,

Monte

P.S. If you ever catch your devices whispering to each other when you enter the room, it might be time to consider switching to two tin cans and a string. Less betrayal, slightly worse audio quality.

As someone who has spent nearly four decades shaping virtual worlds, I’ve witnessed firsthand the profound transformation of video games from a niche pastime to a global cultural force. Today, gaming is more than entertainment; it’s a language, a community, and for many, a core part of their identity. For younger generations, especially, being a “gamer” is not just about playing; it’s about streaming, modding, building worlds, and belonging to something greater than oneself.

The Rise of Gaming as Cultural Identity

Gaming is no longer the realm of a select few. Across the world, millions of players, male and female, young and old, are embracing the gamer label with pride. Research reveals a striking generational shift: while only a small fraction of older players self-identify as gamers, younger generations are far more likely to do so. This signals a cultural evolution, gaming is now mainstream, a badge of belonging rather than a niche hobby.

When someone tells me, “I’m a gamer,” it always feels like a curious declaration. To me, it’s a bit like saying, “I’m a gentleman.” That’s not something you say about yourself; it’s for others to notice or acknowledge. But okay, if you insist, you’re a gamer, I want to know more. I’ll ask, “What’s your favorite game? Why do you love it? How would you compare this game with that one?” The answers reveal so much. Are you drawn to romantic stories, or do you thrive in the chaos of FPS? Are you a strategist at heart, losing yourself in RTS or MOBA? Or is it the rich narratives of JRPGs that capture your imagination?

It’s almost like a new kind of astrological sign, a window into a person’s personality. I want to know if I belong to this new friend’s tribe, or if they belong to mine. There’s a sense of exclusivity here, not in a snobbish way, but in the way that every hobby or passion has its own codes and rituals. We don’t like posers, people who claim the title without passion or experience. Gaming is about authenticity, shared language, and finding your people in a vast digital world.

And, above all, gamers don’t like to be judged by posers who don’t truly understand or appreciate the world we love.

The Power of Community: More Than Play

Gaming communities are vibrant, diverse, and extraordinarily resilient. They form organically around shared interests, collaborative goals, and creative passions that extend far beyond the games themselves. Multiplayer games, in particular, have become powerful engines of social connection, enabling friendships that span continents and cultures in ways that were unimaginable just a generation ago.

Research consistently shows that players who engage in multiplayer games develop what scholars call “gaming social capital,” a profound sense of belonging, trust, and shared purpose that often spills over into real-world relationships and civic engagement. These digital bonds create networks of support that rival traditional community structures, offering something precious in our increasingly fragmented world.

These communities are not just about competition or escapism, though both certainly have their place. They are genuine places of support, mentorship, and even activism. Consider the remarkable story of a Guild Wars 2 player whose home was destroyed by fire. Without any formal organization or corporate mandate, the community spontaneously rallied, raising thousands of dollars to help her rebuild her life. This wasn’t charity in the traditional sense, it was solidarity born from shared virtual experiences that had created real emotional bonds.

The art of modding has also become a cornerstone of these communities, representing perhaps the most creative expression of gaming culture. From custom skins that personalize characters to entirely new worlds that reimagine existing games, modders push the boundaries of what games can be, often inspiring the next generation of professional developers. Games like Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V thrive precisely because of their creative communities, who not only play but also build, teach, and innovate. As one passionate modder explained to me: “You not only shape the game that you want to play, but you can change the visual style, add new weapons, and even make a whole new game. There is no limit to what you can do.” This creative freedom transforms players from passive consumers into active creators, blurring the lines between developer and user in fascinating ways.

Streaming, Creativity, and the New Public Square

The rise of streaming platforms like Twitch and YouTube has fundamentally transformed gaming from a solitary or small-group activity into a shared, public experience that reaches millions. Today’s gaming culture is as much about watching others play as it is about playing yourself, creating new forms of entertainment that previous generations would find bewildering yet compelling.

Streaming has given rise to entirely new forms of celebrity, entrepreneurship, and cultural exchange. It’s not uncommon now for dedicated gamers to spend more time watching streams than playing themselves. This phenomenon signals how deeply gaming culture has permeated daily life and social interaction. These aren’t passive viewing experiences; they’re interactive performances where audiences participate through chat, donations, and shared excitement.

But streaming represents something more profound than mere entertainment. It has evolved into a sophisticated form of storytelling, education, and community building, all rolled into one. Streamers share advanced techniques and insider knowledge, celebrate magnificent victories alongside their viewers, commiserate over crushing defeats, and forge genuine connections with audiences worldwide. This new public square has become a place of learning, laughter, and sometimes profound healing, where people find connection in an increasingly isolated age.

The Language of Gaming: A New Cultural Lexicon

Gaming has given rise to its own rich language, complete with specialized slang, evolving memes, and shared cultural references that create instant bonds between strangers. Terms like “n00b,” “aggro,” and “GG” have transcended their gaming origins to become part of the global lexicon, crossing borders and cultures with remarkable ease.

This linguistic evolution represents something far more significant than mere communication; it’s about belonging and identity. To speak the language of gaming fluently is to be immediately recognized as part of a global tribe, united by shared experiences, everyday struggles, and deeply held values about fairness, skill, and community.

As gaming culture has matured, it has evolved beyond simple entertainment to become a medium through which fundamental values are conveyed and internalized by younger generations. Games, with their intricate rule systems and compelling narratives, construct sophisticated frameworks that define success, respect, and community values in ways that resonate far beyond the screen.

Those of us who create games, like authors and filmmakers before us, wield immense cultural power and responsibility. The stories we choose to tell, the worlds we decide to build, and the communities we actively nurture all play crucial roles in shaping how players see themselves and understand the world around them. As Rob Gallagher insightfully writes in “Videogames, Identity and Digital Subjectivity”: “Games offer a means of coming to terms with a world that is being transformed by digital technologies. As blends of software and fiction, video games are uniquely capable of representing and exploring the effects of digitization on day-to-day life.”

The Benefits of Gaming: More Than Meets the Eye

For far too long, gaming has been profoundly misunderstood by critics, policymakers, and even well-meaning parents. These critics have consistently focused on potential downsides while ignoring or dismissing the overwhelming evidence of gaming’s positive impacts. Reality is far more nuanced and, when examined honestly, overwhelmingly positive.

Gaming consistently fosters critical thinking, complex problem-solving, and sophisticated teamwork skills that transfer directly to academic and professional environments. It encourages creativity, builds resilience in the face of failure, and develops empathy through narrative experiences and collaborative play. Multiple peer-reviewed studies now demonstrate that moderate gaming is linked to better emotional health, significantly lower rates of depression, and stronger social connections compared to non-gaming populations.

Gaming communities provide robust support networks that effectively reduce loneliness and offer genuine senses of belonging, especially for individuals who may feel isolated or misunderstood in their physical communities. As Dr. Linda Kaye, a respected cyberpsychology expert, observes: “Gamers often report that common interest in itself can build friendships and relationships, so that common focus can be really important socially.”

Gaming as a Force for Good

The cultural impact of gaming is now undeniable and continues to expand in remarkable directions. Gaming has become the largest sector of entertainment globally, surpassing film and music combined in both revenue and cultural influence. But its significance extends far beyond pure economics; gaming has emerged as a genuine force for learning, human connection, and positive social change.

Educational games now teach a wide range of subjects, from algebra and biology to coding and foreign languages, often more effectively than traditional methods. Simulation games build leadership skills, enhance teamwork capabilities, and boost self-esteem through meaningful achievement. Games like Minecraft have found their way into classrooms worldwide, where they teach problem-solving, creativity, and collaborative thinking. Meanwhile, the explosive growth of esports has created entirely new avenues for competition, collaboration, and career development.

The gaming industry itself has become a remarkable place of innovation and inclusion. It is demonstrably more diverse, more creative, and more accessible than ever before in its history. As someone who has dedicated their career to making games, I am genuinely proud to be part of a community that consistently values imagination, empathy, and the transformative power of play.

Games as the New Music: Universal, Emotional, and Telling

There’s an old saying from the 1960s: “Never trust anyone who doesn’t like music.” Music was once considered the universal language, a shared cultural experience that brought people together across all boundaries and revealed something essential about their character and values. Today, I feel a remarkably similar sentiment about games. Games have become the new music; they are universal, deeply emotional, and profoundly revealing about who we are as individuals and as a culture.

So yes, I confess I don’t entirely trust anyone who categorically dismisses games. Not because I believe in excluding people with different tastes or interests, but because games have evolved into such a powerful medium for building empathy, fostering imagination, and creating meaningful community connections that rejecting them entirely seems to suggest a certain closed-mindedness.

Perhaps people who dislike games, dismissing them without genuine consideration, lack a certain capacity for lightheartedness or the willingness to embrace imaginative experiences. Those who guard their egos too tightly often struggle to take a joke, embrace new experiences, or appreciate things that exist outside their established comfort zones. They may be unnecessarily quick to judge both things and people they don’t immediately understand.

However, there’s an important caveat: In a world as beautifully diverse as ours, there’s genuinely room for every kind of passion and perspective. If you don’t understand games or if you aren’t interested in them, you don’t have to be toxic or needlessly critical about it. The principle of “live and let live” applies here as much as anywhere. If you don’t want to learn new things or explore unfamiliar territories, that’s ultimately your choice to make. Still, there’s no need to belittle something meaningful just because it doesn’t align with your particular worldview.

A Call to Engagement: Join the Conversation

To my fellow game makers, passionate players, and genuinely curious readers, let us take a moment to celebrate the remarkable cultural richness that gaming has brought into our world. Let us recognize and honor the diverse communities we have built together, acknowledge the powerful stories we have told, and appreciate the countless lives we have touched, inspired, and connected across the globe.

Let us continue to push creative boundaries, actively challenge harmful stereotypes, and create virtual worlds that inspire hope, foster genuine connection, and promote healing in a world that desperately needs all three.

I personally invite you to share your own stories of how gaming has shaped your identity, influenced your friendships, or transformed your career path. What specific games have moved you emotionally? Which communities have welcomed you with open arms? How has gaming fundamentally changed your life or perspective on the world?

Let’s keep this vital conversation going, because in the diverse and ever-expanding world of gaming, everyone has a unique voice worth hearing, and every story truly matters.

Famous Quote to Reflect On:

“Life isn’t just about passing on your genes. We can leave behind much more than just DNA. Through speech, music, literature, and movies… what we’ve seen, heard, felt… anger, joy, and sorrow… these are the things I will pass on. That’s what I live for. We need to pass the torch, and let our children read our messy and sad history by its light. We have all the magic of the digital age to do that with. The human race will probably come to an end sometime, and new species may rule over this planet. Earth may not be forever, but we still have the responsibility to leave what traces of life we can. Building the future and keeping the past alive are one and the same thing.”

Let’s build the future together, one game, one community, one story at a time.
