You know the movie trend where you see the characters in present day at the beginning and then work backwards to figure out how they got there? Well, who are we to neglect a trendy storytelling device? Therefore, the question you have to ask is how did two ladies from California and Alabama end up in Phuket, Thailand. Since you’ve asked, let us set the scene:
We were six months into dating and hanging out at Mission Beach in Southern California when Sam proposed we move to Phuket – completely out of the blue. Of course, the initial reaction was to laugh it off, because it had to be a joke, we’d only known each other for six months. Plot twist – Sam wasn’t joking. After talking about it in depth, we both started to seriously entertain the move. It made sense for us; our lives had a level of flexibility to them that allowed for such bold moves. We worked from home, so why couldn’t that home be in Thailand? We both believe that nothing is permanent, so if we didn’t like it we could simply leave. With that sense of freedom and commitment to the pursuit of joy and endless exploration, we embarked on this amazing journey.
After six months in Phuket, we figured why stop there? If we could go anywhere and do anything – why don’t we? We went from Phuket to Bali and the Gili Islands in Indonesia, where we learned to SCUBA dive and fell in love with the ocean and all of its cool creatures. SCUBA diving gave us direction in our travels, so for the next 2 years we went where the diving was. We gawked at sunken ships and gaped at majestic (and weird) sea creatures. We even got engaged under the water – during a dive in Australia while watching nearby leopard sharks. What can we say – when we love something, it becomes our whole personality (cue this website).
Carrying around everything we owned in a suitcase and a backpack got a little tiresome, so we opted to create a home base in Phuket. The time difference is ideal for work, because we’re able to spend our days how we like and our evenings working. Also, it’s easy to travel from there to some of the most beautiful places in the world for diving. Basically, we just swapped from carrying everything we own to carrying our dive gear (which, unfortunately, means we still carry the same amount of bags). When we’re not working or diving, we play padel tennis and pickleball, sauna, and catch sunsets at the beach by our house.
Studies say the water brings calm and peace – so, if you want more of that – feel free to follow along with our travel account.
